Just when we got used to evolutions, Supercell added a new card type–heroes. The new hero card type is similar to evolutions in that they upgrade normal troops into more powerful versions of themselves. However, while evolutions have to be cycled, with hero variants you’ll play that version every single time you use that troop. Because of this, they aren’t quite as powerful as evolutions, but they’re about on par with champions. The hero card slot in your deck also includes the champion cards, so they’re pretty comparable. However, in this article I’ll only be focusing on ranking the heroes themselves.
If you do want to see a ranking of the champions, though, check out our article ranking them here!
How to Get Hero Cards
As with most things in Clash Royale, unlocking heroes requires either a ton of time or a cash payment (or both). To unlock a hero, you need to acquire 200 Hero Fragments, which you get from a special chest called a Hero Box. Or you can buy the season pass and unlock that season’s featured hero instantly (when applicable). To get the aforementioned Hero Boxes, you just have to progress through the season pass (free and paid sides). It’s also possible that you can get them from some game modes as a random chest reward, but I haven’t been able to confirm this yet.
Ultimately, unlocking heroes is going to come down mostly to money. I’m not 100% sure how long it will take to unlock them with just the fragments yet so I will definitely update this section in the future if it’s not as bad as expected, but I’d expect them to be similar to evolutions. So it’ll take a while to get them if you’re not at least buying the season pass, if not spending more. It’s unfortunate, but that’s how it is as far as I can tell.
6. Wizard

Elixir Cost: 5 | Ability Cost: 2
Ability: Fiery Flight – Launches into the air and throws fearsome fire tornadoes
The heroic Wizard just doesn’t have much to offer, if I’m being honest. While fire tornadoes are good, they just aren’t very different from his normal attacks. The normal Wizard already has AOE fire attacks, so upgraded ones aren’t really that exciting. However, I do think heroic Wizard is a pretty solid card for situations where you already want to play Wizard but not the evolution. There are plenty of situations where heroic Wizard is worth playing, but I do think he’s the worst of the group so far.
5. Musketeer

Elixir Cost: 4 | Ability Cost: 3
Ability: Trusty Turret – Spawns a short-range auto-turret in front of Musketeer
When the heroes first released, Musketeer was by far the best one. Now that they’ve nerfed her turret a bit, though, she’s fallen off quite a lot. That being said, I still think heroic Musketeer is fairly strong. Her ability, Trusty Turret, allows her to spawn a turret which counts as a building. Being able to spawn a building is incredibly strong since it lets her distract any troop, and the turret itself is really helpful for defense since its DPS is good. Ultimately, heroic Musketeer is still strong, but the turret isn’t really that appealing for 3 elixir. 7 elixir for a Musketeer and a turret isn’t the best deal, but it could still be worse.
4. Ice Golem

Elixir Cost: 2 | Ability Cost: 2
Ability: Snowstorm – Conjures a blizzard that damages and slows nearby enemies, then freezes them solid
Heroic Ice Golem is the newest hero in Clash Royale. Despite being the cheapest hero so far, his ability is actually one of the better ones. Snowstorm spawns in a circle around the Ice Golem and freezes enemies who stay near him too long. If you’re using Ice Golem to tank for a win con like Hog Rider, this is excellent since it freezes potential counters. If you’re using him to distract enemy threats like P.E.K.K.A. or Mega Knight, this is helpful since it can damage them while he leads them on a chase across the arena.
Ice Golem’s hero ability doesn’t change the way you play him, but it gives him new capabilities that essentially just make him better at what he was already doing. Not the most exciting upgrade necessarily, but a good one.
3. Mini P.E.K.K.A.

Elixir Cost: 4 | Ability Cost: 1
Ability: Breakfast Boost – Eat pancakes to level up. The longer you wait, the more pancakes he cooks!
Mini P.E.K.K.A.’s hero variant is the one I see most often in competitive decks. That being said, I think that’s more because it’s kind of an all-rounder as opposed to a more specific troop. His ability allows him to eat pancakes to level up and gain some health, which is great in every game mode. It’s particularly good in challenge modes where all cards are set to the same level, as the advantage is even more powerful. Plus, since this is the cheapest heroic ability, it’s even more worthwhile. Heroic Mini P.E.K.K.A. is a really strong troop with no real downsides and an ability which can be really helpful if used correctly, so it’s hard to go wrong with him.
2. Giant

Elixir Cost: 5 | Ability Cost: 2
Ability: Heroic Hurl – Throws the highest-HP enemy troop in reach across the arena.
Heroic Giant is really strong since his heroic ability makes him very difficult to counter. The ability lets him pick up a nearby troop and throw it across the arena, meaning that many single-troop counters like Mini P.E.K.K.A. won’t be as useful. Having a tank that defends himself is always helpful, so it’s hard to go wrong with this one. Giant is also a troop that you can build a deck around, so it’s not surprising that he’s seeing so much use right now. Even if you don’t get the chance to use his heroic ability, he’s still just a strong tank for relatively low elixir cost compared to other ones.
1. Knight

Elixir Cost: 3 | Ability Cost: 2
Ability: Triumphant Taunt – Gains a shield and taunts nearby enemies, forcing them to attack him
In my opinion, heroic Knight is the best hero card in Clash Royale. Knight, in general, is strong since he’s a good tank for a low elixir cost. The heroic ability he gets makes him much more efficient, since he can force nearby enemies/buildings to target him. The best use for this is to force towers to target the Knight instead of a win con that you’d rather have stay alive. For example, you can use heroic Knight to force towers to target him instead of your Hog Rider or Balloon so it lives longer and takes out the tower. Pretty simple, but incredibly efficient (just like the Knight himself). You can also use him to force X-Bow or other similar threats to stop targeting your tower, but that’s a little more niche.
